Sev Necati worked in
partnership with Ealing, Safer Neighbourhood Teams and Metropolitan Police, to
deliver our award winning project “Women & Young People’s Safety
Solution.”
Our second
course worked with a new group of women and girls. The course focused on teaching the group on
how to keep safe in there every day lives as well as empowering them through practical
and effective self-defence techniques for females.
Sev inspires women and girls to build up their
self-worth and increase confidence levels, in dealing with and managing conflict. Overall fitness levels, as well as stamina,
strength and co-ordination are improved.
All our course’s
work with local residents in the area and are all-inclusive regardless of age,
ability or background, bringing women and girls all under one setting to reduce
isolation and bring a deeper understanding of how violence can affect all
females.
The
course can change lives!
It has assisted
many women and girls to change their lives by continuing to be physically
active and empowering them to do what makes them happy!

Participant - Case Study - One
Kan, 44 years old, India British, in
relationship no children.
Please
tell us why you became involved in the project/activities?
I became involved in the course because I saw
the description of it and it interested me a lot. I also work in Ealing and for VS and as a young
woman I thought it would be useful for me and the people that I work, to assist
them in giving them advice where I work.
I also looked on the internet and you had such marvellous reviews, and I
really wanted to join. I also thought I
really liked the theory and how you dropped in a lot of humour and you make it
fun and engaging.
I travel myself a lot and I wanted to develop
my assertiveness and confidence which it did, the one thing you keep stressing
and I wanted to be aware of my surroundings which I know is really important.
Please
tell us how participating has helped you?
The sessions have helped me with my fitness which
has certainly improved, one of my friends said I have learned the self-defence really
well and for me the awareness of my surroundings and out and about when I am alone. For example, like when I was walking my dog
late at night at 12pm. The other night when
I was doing the same thing you came into my mind and I thought not to make
myself vulnerable even when I am with my dog.
Awareness really hit me in the course being
aware how important it is. My confidence
has improved as well I am not as afraid anymore and not to be aggressive but
assertiveness is something I have certainly learnt.
Also being aware of the services that are available
to assist you, you have really made us aware of these.
Please
tell us what has changed for you as a result of engaging with the project?
What has changed for me is I feel I am very
much aware of my surroundings then I was before, about an hour after I left the
course I had to go to the airport I usually just float along I didn’t this
time, I was more safety aware and made sure that I was not alone at night when
out and about and had all my stuff on me.
I was aware of my surroundings being in a foreign country a lot more
than what I would have done and not knowing the language made me more alert
this time.
I think that normally I can talk a bit
aggressively; I am now more assertive in my approach. I deal with the other person’s point of view
instead of just reacting, so I am thinking more now instead of just reacting as
both parties come out better, if you think before you react.
I think your courses are amazing and everyone
benefits from it!
When I was aboard I told everyone about it
and they wished they had this opportunity as it would be nice, they said to me you
are so lucky to have had it.
It was also really kind of you to go up and
beyond what you provide and I appreciated the 121 work you did with me.
I hope you are able to continue your courses
as so many women and girls will continue to benefit!

The
Participant - Case Study - Two
Maggie, 41 years old, White, married and two
children.
Please
tell us why you became involved in the project/activities?
I became involved in the course because I
thought it was in my daughters interest to learn self-defence as the streets
are not safe as there are no police men around, mainly for my 14 year old
daughter as she will wants to go out more and I want to worry less.
The reason for myself was to feel more
confident walking around and as you know it’s not only at night things happened
it’s in the day with muggings and moped issues and I wanted to defend myself if
anything happened.
Please
tell us how participating has helped you?
The sessions have helped me defiantly! It has
helped with my fitness as I realised I didn’t have any. I am much fitter now and I tried all the
moves on my husband! I feel like I can deal with actual threats on my own and I
have been rehearsing them in my head to keep them fresh.
I am less worried waking around as I have put
into practise what you have taught us and I have continued to discuss these
issues with my daughter and I am not walking in places that make me feel
vulnerable and changing what I do, such as walking towards traffic to make me
more aware.
You were the best teacher ever!
You were so straight forward and no BS!
We just loved that about you and all the
stories you told us and you made it so fun and nice so thank you.
Please
tell us what has changed for you as a result of engaging with the project?
What has changed for me is I feel being more
aware of my surroundings. I look at the
street differently now as I see it more of as an environment and I notice the
threats and who could help me out if something.
I can manage situations better, I am better
equipped.
Knowing that you can manage situations you
walk better and it is more confidence for you when you are alone and you just
feel different which is positive.
I really hope the council will do my courses
in Ealing, as there is so much demand for it.
Sev you were brilliant!
