Personal Safety Classes

Personal safety classes launched

St Ann's was host to the first set of personal safety classes organised by St Ann's Safer Neighbourhoods team and Haringey Council, to help reduce fear and the perception of crime.
Up to 17 women, aged between 13 and 46, attended the 2 hour classes, which involved theory based discussions behind staying safe and personal awareness, as well as practical techniques.
Cabinet Member Cllr Nilgun Canver takes part in personal safety class. The classes, taught by fully qualified instructor Sev Necati, were targeted at females from the age of 13 years and ran throughout January and ended on 28 January. The next set of classes started on 2 February.
Sgt Tim Hannah of St Ann's Safer Neighbourhoods team, said:
“In the summer it was identified that a section of the community, especially females, felt wary about using public transport in the local area and about walking home. Following liaison with the council and partners, funding was secured and we were able to employ the services of an excellent instructor. The general feedback has gone to show that these classes are a great way to learn how to stay safe in your local neighbourhood, as well promoting personal health.“
Sev Necati, Class Instructor, said:
"The women and girls that attended each week said they had become more aware and more confident. The majority's self-esteem and confidence had increased and their fears of violence and bullying had been reduced"
Cllr Nilgun Canver, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, said:
“This is a really valuable initiative to help women feel safe.
“Fear of crime can have a real impact on people’s lives.
“These classes aim to give residents greater confidence as well as teaching them how they can look after themselves if they are confronted.”
All women who attended were very positive about the skills learnt from the classes. One woman said:
"It was excellent. Sev was a wonderful teacher and the two community police women were superb and extremely helpful with advice. I will certainly mention it to neighbours to see if any women are interested as it was so worthwhile."
