"EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TEACHER"

Sev Necati worked in partnership with Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime & Ealing!

Sev Necati worked in partnership with Ealing, Safer Neighbourhood Teams and Metropolitan Police, to deliver our award winning project “Women & Young People’s Safety Solution.”

Our second course worked with a new group of women and girls.  The course focused on teaching the group on how to keep safe in there every day lives as well as empowering them through practical and effective self-defence techniques for females.

Sev inspires women and girls to build up their self-worth and increase confidence levels, in dealing with and managing conflict.  Overall fitness levels, as well as stamina, strength and co-ordination are improved.

All our course’s work with local residents in the area and are all-inclusive regardless of age, ability or background, bringing women and girls all under one setting to reduce isolation and bring a deeper understanding of how violence can affect all females.

The course can change lives!

It has assisted many women and girls to change their lives by continuing to be physically active and empowering them to do what makes them happy!

The Participant - Case Study - One
Kan, 44 years old, India British, in relationship no children.

Please tell us why you became involved in the project/activities?
I became involved in the course because I saw the description of it and it interested me a lot.  I also work in Ealing and for VS and as a young woman I thought it would be useful for me and the people that I work, to assist them in giving them advice where I work.  I also looked on the internet and you had such marvellous reviews, and I really wanted to join.  I also thought I really liked the theory and how you dropped in a lot of humour and you make it fun and engaging.

I travel myself a lot and I wanted to develop my assertiveness and confidence which it did, the one thing you keep stressing and I wanted to be aware of my surroundings which I know is really important.

Please tell us how participating has helped you?
The sessions have helped me with my fitness which has certainly improved, one of my friends said I have learned the self-defence really well and for me the awareness of my surroundings and out and about when I am alone.  For example, like when I was walking my dog late at night at 12pm.  The other night when I was doing the same thing you came into my mind and I thought not to make myself vulnerable even when I am with my dog.

Awareness really hit me in the course being aware how important it is.  My confidence has improved as well I am not as afraid anymore and not to be aggressive but assertiveness is something I have certainly learnt.

Also being aware of the services that are available to assist you, you have really made us aware of these.

Please tell us what has changed for you as a result of engaging with the project?
What has changed for me is I feel I am very much aware of my surroundings then I was before, about an hour after I left the course I had to go to the airport I usually just float along I didn’t this time, I was more safety aware and made sure that I was not alone at night when out and about and had all my stuff on me.  I was aware of my surroundings being in a foreign country a lot more than what I would have done and not knowing the language made me more alert this time.

I think that normally I can talk a bit aggressively; I am now more assertive in my approach.  I deal with the other person’s point of view instead of just reacting, so I am thinking more now instead of just reacting as both parties come out better, if you think before you react.

I think your courses are amazing and everyone benefits from it!

When I was aboard I told everyone about it and they wished they had this opportunity as it would be nice, they said to me you are so lucky to have had it.

It was also really kind of you to go up and beyond what you provide and I appreciated the 121 work you did with me.

I hope you are able to continue your courses as so many women and girls will continue to benefit!

The Participant - Case Study - Two
Maggie, 41 years old, White, married and two children.

Please tell us why you became involved in the project/activities?
I became involved in the course because I thought it was in my daughters interest to learn self-defence as the streets are not safe as there are no police men around, mainly for my 14 year old daughter as she will wants to go out more and I want to worry less.
The reason for myself was to feel more confident walking around and as you know it’s not only at night things happened it’s in the day with muggings and moped issues and I wanted to defend myself if anything happened.

Please tell us how participating has helped you?
The sessions have helped me defiantly! It has helped with my fitness as I realised I didn’t have any.  I am much fitter now and I tried all the moves on my husband! I feel like I can deal with actual threats on my own and I have been rehearsing them in my head to keep them fresh.

I am less worried waking around as I have put into practise what you have taught us and I have continued to discuss these issues with my daughter and I am not walking in places that make me feel vulnerable and changing what I do, such as walking towards traffic to make me more aware.

You were the best teacher ever!

You were so straight forward and no BS!
We just loved that about you and all the stories you told us and you made it so fun and nice so thank you.

Please tell us what has changed for you as a result of engaging with the project?
What has changed for me is I feel being more aware of my surroundings.  I look at the street differently now as I see it more of as an environment and I notice the threats and who could help me out if something.

I can manage situations better, I am better equipped.
Knowing that you can manage situations you walk better and it is more confidence for you when you are alone and you just feel different which is positive.

I really hope the council will do my courses in Ealing, as there is so much demand for it.

Sev you were brilliant!

Sev Necati worked in partnership with Ealing, Safer Neighbourhood Teams and Metropolitan Police!

Sev Necati worked in partnership with Ealing, Safer Neighbourhood Teams and Metropolitan Police, to deliver our award winning project “Women & Young People’s Safety Solution.”

Our course is specifically designed for women and girls in teaching them how to keep safe and empower them to make positive choices.  Through the training they are inspired with Sev’s teaching and learn how to build self-worth and confidence levels.  Health benefit included increased fitness levels, stamina, strength and improvement in mental and emotional well-being.

Our courses work with local residents in the area and are all-inclusive regardless of age, ability or background, bringing women and girls all under one setting to reduce isolation and fears.

The course changes many of these women and girls lives by giving them the essential tools and knowledge!

The Participant - Case Study - One
Jane, 21 years old, White British, single.
Please tell us why you became involved in the project/activities?
I became involved in the course because to boost my confidence and to know how to defend myself. Also if I knew the skills I could empower other females.
I had not so good experiences in the pass, someone older than me that took advantage and it affected me.  This course has helped to heal me, taught me that I am strong and it given me closure.  I also had this image that you needed a man to defend you but this course has taught me that is not necessary, having the control and taking my power back has given me that confidence.

Please tell us how participating has helped you?
The sessions have helped me in my mind as before I felt really weak, I feel a lot stronger now.
Learning my rights and learning how to protect myself and knowing other services out there have been really useful to know.  I am more aware and more confident in myself when I am out and about.
My mind-set has changed I feel stronger within myself and I talk to myself in a positive way, learning I am not weak, attracting a different path and being prepared if things come up.  I feel I have learned how to focus and believe that I can manage conflict as I have been taught what to do in those difficult situations.
Confidence is one of the key lessons on your course.
The media portrays women and female’s generally with negative images and that women and girls are in competition.  You showed us solidarity that women and girls are learning together, from all ages, backgrounds and cultures which is more empowering.  It changes your view of women and girls and you learn that we are there for one another.
You have given me the skills I need, it makes you a lot fitter and healthier, you understand taking care of your body and health is really important.  Understanding the first moment of fight and flight and it gives you self-belief that you can defend yourself, which is really positive.

Please tell us what has changed for you as a result of engaging with the project?
What has changed for me is I am more aware when I am about I am not avoiding going out to places, I am locking the car door, I don’t have fear of walking alone as I am more aware of people and my environment.
I am more vigilant about other girls if they are in danger and to see if they are in danger what I could do to assist.
My sister and me are going to do boxing in our local gym as we feel we have the confidence to continue the exercises you have taught us to stay fitter and get stronger and keep learning.

I would recommend your course to everyone and especially to young girls it’s more than just physical exercises and by taking control of your own lives it is empowering.  Especially the use of social media and how people can use it against you, knowing that your parents cannot forever protect you and to learn to take care of yourself is an important life skill.  So thank you for that.

The Participant - Case Study - Two
Sari, 31 years old, Mix, in a relationship, no children.
Please tell us why you became involved in the project/activities?
I became involved in the course because the first reason is the rising level of crime in London and making me feel safe as we can all be victims at any-time in day, travelling, it can happen at any-time.
I am also working with DV clients and I wanted to know how the course would affect me so I could refer clients to the course as well at a later stage.
And sometimes because of the nature of my work we sometimes get targeted by perpetrators and I needed to boost my confidence, feel a bit safer and know what to do in a dangerous situation.
There have been situations where I have been in arguments in the street that I have had and I feel that some crazy people around and I wanted to know how to protect myself without seriously hurting anyone.

Please tell us how participating has helped you?
The sessions have helped me, I have learned a lot of techniques and I know I can train I didn’t think I could do anything before.  I thought, I was weak because of my size and body, but it has showed me with the training I can do it and improving my physical fitness and be able to look after myself is important.
It affected the way I am thinking about myself and it has boosted my confidence during the training.  The things you said to us was important, we need to balance our lives and be ourselves and do what makes us happy, how to say no and be more firm be more confident and feel good about ourselves.
It has really helped me a lot and I am telling everyone about it.

Please tell us what has changed for you as a result of engaging with the project?
What has changed for me is it has improved my own safety and I am not inviting perpetrators by saying I am weak you can attack me, not using my phone when I am walking and keeping my valuables more safe, there are changes in my work and personal life and I am looking to get more active, to build on the things I have learned, like going swimming and to keep myself active.
I think I am less paranoid and checking my surroundings a lot more, more aware of things in general, I am more assertive in dealing with things.
I think the course has been a great experience and I am so glad I did it.
I wish you get more funding and many more women can attend and get this experience.  I do not consider myself to have low confidence issues, however I know there are many women that do.
Women who have had less chances in life, have experienced domestic abuse, abuse, and learning to trust themselves and feeling safe and young women (teenagers) all women of all ages will highly benefit from your training.

It is such a positive experience and meeting women and girls from all backgrounds and experiences was a really a positive experience.
If there is anything I can do to assist you to get further funding than please let me know.  It was a great experience and you have my greatest respect.  Thank you!
