Sev Necati Training worked in partnership with Comic Relief and Willesden Sports Centre

Sev Necati Training worked in partnership with Comic Relief and Willesden Sports Centre, to deliver our award winning project “Women & Young People’s Safety Solution.”

Our workshop for women and girls in personal safety, self-defence and confidence building took part in Willesden Green and had a very positive and empowering impact on the group.   The project worked with women and girls, from the local community, from various backgrounds, ages, and abilities and who had multiple-complex needs.  Women aged 70 took part as well as young girls aged 13.  They all took part in the same practical training and drills and trained together with their own peer group as well as mixing with different members so they could push themselves beyond their limits.

The group took part in discussions and through the training were able to increase their stamina and strength.  Each week their confidence and self-worth grew and by the end of the course women and girls felt empowered to deal with and manage conflict as well as having more positive relationships.

Our projects look to empower women and girls and change lives!  Read how we do this and come join our next series of workshops!

Please tell us why they became involved in your project/activities?
It was an important thing for me to learn as I am going on holiday and it’s an all-girls group I wanted to feel confident and not be afraid if danger approaches us.  I was attacked a few months ago and made me feel vulnerable and I thought it would be a good confidence boost.  Basically it was with my brother he thought I was being rude and he started hitting me and I went to call the police but my mother asked me not too as I would then have to leave the house.  After that incident nothing felt the same, I was afraid he would do the same thing again.  I don’t talk to my brother. My mum is scared of him.  I have now moved out.

Please tell us how participating helped them?
It has boosted my confidence and I feel more-safer on the road.  I know what to do in a situation how to protect myself and I have a chance of surviving and not becoming a repeat victim.  And I can protect others around me, as well.

Please tell us what has changed for the participant as a result of engaging with the project?
I have changed a lot.  I realised I am stronger than I think and I am.  I can overcome things.  Like completing the course I am capable and I can do it, I am much stronger than I think I am.  I was able to do the striking and I thought I wouldn’t be able too.  So this has helped me a lot.

Thank you for everything!

The Participant - Case Study - Two
Karen, 25, East European, Single, no children.

Please tell us why they became involved in your project/activities?
I joined the course I realised that before I came to London I didn’t realise in was so dangerous, were I was working there was so many incident’s so I thought I could learn some tactics and strikes I could learn as a single woman to protect myself.  Mostly when I was back home I felt safer but in London it’s not like this.  I knew a woman was perceived weaker than a man but it doesn’t have to be like that.

Please tell us how participating helped them?
It has helped me the first thing it has made me much more confident mentally and when it come to the attack from anyone I was scared about the attack would they go away and now I feel more confident on what to do if I do feel scared.  Learning about muscle memory and feel more confident in case of an attack and what to do before something happens.  Physically it has made me stronger and it has reduced my smoking!
It was very nice to see like that at the beginning women thought they were so weak but they improved week by week and saw how strong they were and built their confidence and it was nice to see that.

Please tell us what has changed for the participant as a result of engaging with the project?
What has changed, the first thing I broke up with my boyfriend as he doesn’t respect me enough as I learnt this through the relationship’s work.  I realised he wasn’t treating me well his behaviour and what he was saying and it put me down.  I told him I didn’t like it and how uncomfortable I found his joke’s, but he didn’t understand so we broke up and it’s a relief to be quite honest.

I feel confident coming home late at night and if someone is looking at me threatening or intimidating or sexual way, or a way I feel uncomfortable I feel more confident within myself as they have no right at looking at me in this way and it has made me feel confident in dealing with this kind of situation.

I use to me so nervous before but I have calmed down now, maybe because of the relationship and everything else.  I was very active before but it didn’t make me feel relaxed.  I use to do so many things, horse riding and other sports.  The training I have done with you has really relaxed me.

Before I went for the course I thought it would be more just physically fighting I didn’t realise it would be theory and I took more from the theory and mind work.  The physically side pushed my limit’s.  I will be continually the training at another martial arts place.
I think the theory was amazing.

I feel going into a new relationship I know who I am and how I want to be treated which is so positive and empowering for me.
Thank you!

The Participant - Case Study - One
Samantha is married and has 4 children, aged 44, Black Caribbean.

Please tell us why you became involved in your project/activities?
I became involved for my own self-protection for my children and to learn my rights regarding work.  I work in a hospital when I sometimes have aggressive patients; I wanted to know how to deal with them and for the street.
I have a lot of issues at work, being bullied and I didn’t know where I stood.  I have also been attacked at school by someone that is known to me, they have physically attacked me and knocked me several times her and her and friends.  They have continually laughed at me and I have felt intimidated and threatened by this group.  I didn’t know what my rights were if they hit me whether I could prevent it or not by being able to use self-defence myself.

Please tell us how participating helped you?
It has helped me to control myself especially in the work situation and I do worry about what’s happening to me, but I have stopped worrying because I have learned to speak up for myself and I can say NO now.  I am no longer afraid of them saying I am not a good team player.  I take a deep breath when something happens understanding my rights and knowing my strength on the streets and in my home.  In the work place it is very challenging because of their rules and I cannot over ride it even though the law and their policies say one thing.  I know how I can get help if I need it further, it has given me a light into what direction to turn and what direction to go in.  The course has helped me a lot with my self-confidence.

Please tell us what has changed for you as a result of engaging with the project?
I have learned to control myself before I was confused on what to do, where to go. I know what my rights are I know how to manage myself on the street.  I feel more confident on how to approach situations in a certain way and what to do.  Before I use to argue about things but now I know what channels to take to get the help I need.  I feel more empowered and confident.
I think what you are doing is great! It’s not only self-defence but also learning to have control. It has helped me a lot with my home environment with my children and I have lot more respect for myself and what I can do to benefit me.  My relationships with others has improved I have spoken to someone about my husband as I know that I was being mentally abused before, being bullied and my children were also being abused.  I have taken the right steps so this has stopped I have taken steps to feel secure in my home for me and my children.

The Participant - Case Study - Two
Karen is single no children, aged 29, White British.

Please tell us why you became involved in your project/activities?
I joined the course originally because I am travelling on my own so I wanted to be prepared with self-defence and hold myself in certain situations.  I hadn’t realised the course would have the confidence, self-worth and belief work as part of it.  It was something that I had been looking for a long time.  It was like fate as I wanted to do something like that for a long time.

Please tell us how participating helped you?
I feel stronger, I feel more confident, prepared and equipped for certain scenarios.  I feel the physically techniques have given me confidence to do self-defence if I need too, the law has empowered me, it has given me so much confidence in general life, the tools that you taught me on confidence and self-worth are really working on myself and changing things for me.  I didn’t realise how big my personal issues were, I do the work every night now which really helps me and if I don’t I realise I have too.

Please tell us what has changed for you as a result of engaging with the project?
Confidence has changed hugely I feel totally different I feel aware of things that I didn’t know how to deal with, enlightened, confident, and prepared the confidence is the biggest change, and equipped with different skills that I can further develop on my own.  I feel much stronger physically and mentally knowing and understanding where my power comes from.
I feel much happier, I still have moments but I am good. I would like to do your confidence course but as I am going away travelling I would love to do it when I get back.  I feel more empowered and I am recommending the course to everyone.  The length of the course was perfect, 3 hours each session, you have to really commit to it, you go through things with the group and you, it takes time to open up, because of everything everyone else is also going through but you eventually do.  I think it was really bonding, especially the physically side.
My friends think it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me, they say this woman is amazing this is what they say, it’s like what she has done has really helped you change yourself especially to do with your confidence.
Thank you for everything and I think it’s amazing for women that are looking for it and need it.

Thank you for doing such an amazing course for women!

The Participant - Case Study - One
Sammy is a 38 year old female, White - French, single one child.

Please tell us why you became involved in your project/activities?
Because I had been a victim of crime recently so I felt powerless and didn’t know how to react, what to do and I was feeling down and depressed and it was related to what had happened to me.  I had to gain some control and power and Victims Support said that there wasn’t any self-defence they could send me too, but I knew that it was what I needed.
Somebody saw the advertising online and sent it to me letting me know, as they knew I would be interested.

One of my most recent incidents was that I was a victim when I was walking back home around 9pm I was alone it was dark.  It was a busy road / pavement and I was walking up towards a group of people, they were taking all the space the people on the pavement so I was in a situation where I had to touch someone’s shoulder I had no choice otherwise I would have to walk in the road which wasn’t advisable as the road was really busy.  I accidently brushed a man, and him and his friend got very angry and started abusing me verbally, and we then got into a confrontation and they chased me, they then chased me in their car and they threw stuff at me and they physically assaulted me threatening to attack me and kill me, they really scared me, they tried to jump on me and I didn’t know what to do.  I now know what to do if it happened again.  The two men were huge and I thought what would I do, I now know.

I felt vet angry after the incident as it wasn’t necessary and felt powerless and I changed my route I wouldn’t normally do that but I was scared and also I felt down by the police as they couldn’t find the person and couldn’t help me.

Please tell us how participating helped you?
It has helped me because it gave me some very practical solutions in what I could do if it happened again, to better judge and avoid situations and how to get out of situations and it gave me the confidence if I couldn’t get out what I could do practically.  I really needed a refresher on how to protect myself as I had done Judo before.  I was scared if I got hit what I would do, I feel I am more knowledge now in what to do, and how to protect myself physically.

Please tell us what has changed for you as a result of engaging with the project?
What has changed I feel more confident.  I feel more confident in plenty of ways physically mainly because of the drills I can rely on my body more, in the law and more confident in defending myself.
It has given me tools I didn’t know about, it has given me more awareness and I feel more conscious that I would know what to do if necessary.

The Participant - Case Study - Two
Joy is a 57 year old female, Black-British, single 2 children.

Please tell us why you became involved in your project/activities?
I felt the need to learn a little bit more rapid response skills, to be more alert, and have more street creed for my age, and be aware as the change in nature of the environment I am now living in and the nature of my work.  I needed to learn some more modern techniques.  It re-forced things I thought I knew and gave me the confidence to put them into practise, with the new skills I also learnt.

Please tell us how participating helped you?
It has heightened my awareness and boosted my confidence.  Especially because it was an all-female group and there was other people around my age that were there.  That made me feel more comfortable and at ease as mixed group of ages and cultures were present and it was really encouraging for me and made me want to get involved more.  I also made some new friends, I saw that as bonus.

Please tell us what has changed for you as a result of engaging with the project?
What has changed for me is that I feel much more confident in being in conflicting situations and I feel like I have some basic tools that I can use if I really needed too.  I have a proper approach of dealing with confronting situations in the pass I would use my basic street creed.  This course has given me more discipline.  I have more techniques to defend myself if I felt threatened or were in danger situations.
The nature of my work is very challenging and I don’t feel intimated anymore as I can deal with situations in a more relaxed way.  I now know how I can action things now without having to fight physically.  I can handle more things more responsibility without getting hurt.  I wish I had some of these techniques years ago.
The course was very regarding to finish even though my leg was already hurting.  I am happy I attended all the sessions and I finished the course.  This was something really good for me.  I really got a lot out of it for myself.  The course has taught me and allowed me to take better care of myself.
