Sev Necati Training working in partnership with LendLease, EECF and Hub67!

Sev Necati worked in partnership with Lend Lease, EECF and Hub67, to deliver our award winning project “Women & Young People’s Safety Solution.”

Our course specifically designed for women and girls in personal safety and self-defence was empowering and helped the group become more confident as well as fitter and stronger.   The course worked with local women and girls, who came from various backgrounds, ages, and abilities.

Our programmes are inclusive and we work towards providing females a safe environment to share their own personal experiences as well as feel less isolated and improve their overall well-being and confidence in this specialised area.

The group took part in self-defence activities each week, which meant that their stamina and overall strength improved.  All females had an increase in confidence and self-worth and felt empowered at the end of the project.

Our projects look to inspire women and girls.  We work towards assisting in positive change and growth in their lives!

The Participant - Case Study - One
Mary, 56, female, White British, no children, and widower.
Please tell us why you became involved in the project/activities?
I joined the course as I go out a lot more in Hackney without the car and I am a little lady and thought I needed the heads up to know what’s happening around me, even though I believe I know a lot of stuff its always useful to learn more.  I use to go nowhere without the car when I was married but now I am windowed I have to go out more on my own without the car to be more social and not to become isolated.  This I have realised is so important.  I wanted to gain the confidence to be able to do this and I saw the course as a way of helping me.

Please tell us how participating helped you?
I feel I walk more positively I keep my wits around me concentrating, rarely talk on the mobile when on the street.  I loved all the tips you gave me about ATM’s and things. I am starting to build up a mental knowledge about where the safer ATM's are and generally safer stops around me, which was very useful.  I also released my age didn’t restrict me for taking part and physically I am stronger than I thought I was.

Please tell us what has changed for you as a result of engaging with the project?
I am more confident and I am determined to build on the moves you taught me into my own routine.  I have done extra classes since seeing you and I am walking more.  I don’t want to give up because I am older I want to now live a more full filled life and I know that exercise and taking care of myself more is important.  I see I have the ability to do it.  Thank you!

The Participant - Case Study - Two
Natasha, female, 19, Black and White African, in a relationship, no children.
Please tell us why you became involved in the project/activities?
I got involved because I had experienced violence before in my relationships, some were partner relationships and some were gang related.  It made me anxious being alone, anxious being around men in general and also being out on my own.
It was important for me to join the course as I wanted to be more confident to understand how to get out of certain situations and how to get away.  I also wanted to be mentally confident as well as physically strong.

Please tell us how participating helped you?
It has helped me a lot as I feel more confident practically.  I feel more aware mentally of situations around me, to be on the look at, be aware of my surroundings and how to avoid potential dangerous situations.

Please tell us what has changed for you as a result of engaging with the project?
I know practically skills to protect myself, as well as seeing my strengths and weaknesses.  Being more confident, being aware of my own issues, its high lightened issues that are still inherent in me emotionally and psychologically that I need to still deal with.  I am going to do get extra support.

Our Combat Series of Personal Safety & Self-Defence Workshops at The Edge with Sev Necati Training!

Sev Necati Training (SNT) Combat Series of Personal Safety and Self-Defence workshops which were held at The Edge.  Our "Street Combat Personal Safety and Self-Defence Programme" designed specifically for women and girls which engaged with females aged over fourteen years of age.  There was eight two hour weekly workshops, which focused in depth on an area of street combat.  Each specific workshop had participants engaged in theory and practical exercises.  Participants were able to join the whole series or each module individually.

Our current classes (physical real street self-defence training) are also running at The Edge: http://sevnecati.blogspot.co.uk/search?updated-min=2016-01-01T00:00:00-08:00&updated-max=2017-01-01T00:00:00-08:00&max-results=15

Some Feedback from the Women & Girls that attended:

"I attended two workshops delivered by Sev – one on dealing with grabs and weapons, and the other was a session on positive thinking and mindset. I found both workshops inspiring, as they encouraged me to think about myself, to feel confident about myself and my ability to deal with an attack, and most importantly, to be fully aware at all times when out on the street.

Sev is very encouraging and during the workshop on grabs, gave us the opportunity to practise escaping from several different kinds of hold. I came into the workshop nervous and unsure whether I would be able to do what was asked and left feeling more confident and able to get out of a situation, if unfortunately it ever arose. I was very glad that I went along!"  Lauren, CEO.

"The course focuses on both body and mind training which I think is essential for a self defence course. Sometimes the mind training can be more important as it enables you to build up to an alternative reaction mode when faced with an attack (as opposed to the freeze mode). I think this is one of the main benefits of undertaking this course as opposed to others.

Sev is a down to business person and you will realise this from the first lesson you will have. You will be faced with exposure to physical contact from day one. This will obviously be done in a safe/training environment and will help you identify your physical capabilities." Corina, Lawyer.

"We covered a lot of areas during the course, both practically and theoretically.  It was a very through and intense course, lots of practically training and opportunities to ask questions and cover areas we weren't sure about and to go over them again.  The training was very good, aspects of the law and the way Sev was enthusiastic and very encouraging."  Barbara, Career.

"The knowledge and confidence that I gained was fantastic. I hope I never have to fight, but simply knowing that my confidence will help me in a situation like that is a relief.  I liked that positivity; mindfulness and joy are also ingredients for a less chance of attack. If only more young people (girls and boys) had opportunities for that.  The actual body workouts were great!" Saba, Research Fellow.

“My self-esteem has increased.  I understand how to manage risk”

“I now know how to stop becoming a victim! Thank you, so much.  It has changed my life”

"I have changed. I feel as a woman I can protect myself and I don’t need a man to protect me anymore. I recommend this course to every woman who has experienced any form of attack as it will help you to gain confidence again."

Case Study One:
Jackie is a 19 year old-female, Black-Caribbean, Single, and has no children.

Please tell us why they became involved in the activities?
It was an important thing for me to learn as I am going on holiday and it’s an all-girls group I wanted to feel confident and not be afraid if danger approaches us.  I was attacked a few months ago and made me feel vulnerable and I thought it would be a good confidence boost.  Basically it was with my brother he thought I was being rude and he started hitting me and I went to call the police but my mother asked me not too as I would then have to leave the house.  After that incident nothing felt the same, I was afraid he would do the same thing again.  I don’t talk to my brother. My mum is scared of him.  I have now moved out.

Please tell us how participating helped you?
It has boosted my confidence and I feel more-safer on the road.  I know what to do in a situation how to protect myself and I have a chance of surviving and not becoming a repeat victim.  And I can protect others around me, as well.

Please tell us what has changed for you as a result of engaging with us?
I have changed a lot.  I realised I am stronger than I think and I am.  I can overcome things.  Like completing the course I am capable and I can do it.  I was able to do the striking and I thought I wouldn’t be able too.  So this has helped me a lot.

Thank you for everything!

Case Study Two:
Becky is single and has no children, aged 33, White European Polish.

Please tell us why they became involved in the activities?
I became involved to learn how to protect myself on the streets and at work (because I work in a public space and I had been in incidents) and feel safer where I live.  Also because I reported things to the police before I wanted to feel safe in knowing what I could do to protect myself if it was necessary and these pass experiences happened again, I would feel safe and secure about protecting myself.

Please tell us how participating has helped you?
It has helped me become more confident in my local area and comfortable about my own personal safety.  If I go visit a place I don’t know like a city I feel confident about protecting myself, against strangers and others.

I feel in any situation that may happen in the future I will be able to protect myself as all the scenarios we went through.

Please tell us what has changed for you as a result of engaging with us?
I have changed I feel as a women I can protect myself and I don’t need a man to protect me anymore.  I feel strong and also feel that all the information that was given out was useful and I know where to ask for help if I am in trouble with anything else.

I feel like I have a right to feel safe and confident on the street and I can protect myself and know how to behave in a situation.  I feel I have a right to my own personally space.

I recommend this course to every woman about personal safety or experienced any form of attack as it will help them to gain confidence again and they have a right to protect themselves.

I have already recommended this course to many people.

Case Study Three:
Karen is married with one child, aged 37, Moroccan.

Please tell us why they became involved in the activities?
I joined to learn to protect myself because I had been attacked before and I didn’t want it to happen again.  I wanted my daughter to protect herself because I didn’t want my daughter to be attacked like I had been.  Also to understand that she had the right to say No to anyone that may feel its ok to touch her without her permission.

Please tell us how participating has helped you both?
Me and my daughter get to train together now, outside of your sessions and we have become real close by doing this.  I feel like I don’t need to protect herself she can do this all by herself now.  She has also made new friends and because I have met the other girl and I like her it gives me the confidence to allow her to go out with her.  I really like that she has made a new friend outside of the school.

Please tell us what has changed for the you as a result of engaging with us?
I feel more confident and can do things I didn’t have the confidence in doing before, I feel stronger and safer.  I don’t feel restricted anymore because it’s dark outside or their bullies outside.  So I feel more confident and feel more empowered I have loss my fear now, which has enabled me to become more social.

Having you encourage me and telling me how strong I am it gave me so much confidence and I love training with my daughter my physically ability has improved greatly.  We laugh and lesson together and it has brought my family together strongly which I really appreciate.

Case Study Four:

Natalie is a 20 year old female, Black-British and single with no children.

Please tell us why you became involved in the activities?
I became involved because I wanted to learn personal defence if I were to encounter dangerous situations. I am pleased to say that this opportunity taught me self-defence and most importantly built my confidence.

Please tell us how participating helped you?
Participating in the project helped me to develop into a stronger individual. My interaction with others improved my teamwork skills.

Please tell us what has changed for you as a result of engaging with us?
From my engagement I noticed changes in myself. Firstly, I have become more confident when outdoors. Secondly, I feel stronger and empowered because the physical practical taught me how to protect myself if in threatening situations. Lastly, it has enabled me to believe in my abilities and understand my capabilities in terms of strength. Overall it was an amazing experience.
